Mercier ships WSOP bracelet in PLO

Adding to his glowing tally of top flight results, Jason Mercier won his first bracelet at the World Series of Poker Wednesday.

The win came in the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event following a fast-paced, highly dramatic final table.

"My only goal when I came to the World Series was to win a bracelet," Mercier said.

He came into the final fourth in chips, but fared badly in the early exchanges and suddenly found himself near the bottom of the pack.

But things were about to change.

"I lost half my chips pretty early," he said. "I was able to win a few key pots in a row and get some momentum going and once I got the chip lead, I never looked back."

Victa Park, An Tran and Dario Alioto made early exits and the final looked like it would take a while to settle, before Mercier switched on the afterburners, knocking out Jonathan Tare, Chris Biondino and Matt Giannetti in quick succession.

"The styles and stack sizes dictated there would be a lot of aggressive play," Mercier reasoned.

Once Steven Burkholder disposed of Kevin Iacofano to get heads-up with Mercier, there seemed an air of inevitability about who would collect the bracelet, despite Burkholder holding a slim chip advantage.

"Steve's a real nice guy, but I felt like I definitely had an edge in the heads up," Mercier said.

"I never thought I didn't have a good chance to win."

Mercier ground down Burkholder before both players flopped trips and an outkicked Mercier turned a full house to take down the title and $237,415 in prize money.

His rise up to the elite echelons of the poker community has come in a relatively short space of time.

A blogger for PokerListings, Mercier burst onto the scene at EPT San Remo where he rose from poker obscurity to take the title and $1,372,893.

Any murmurs that this was just a flash in the pan result were crushed when Mercier made his second EPT final table in Barcelona later in 2008.

He continued to string together a series of incredible results, including final tabling the PLO event at the WSOPE and beating John Juanda heads-up to win the EPT High Rollers event on the London leg of the EPT for $944,847.

As if any further evidence of Mercier's talent was required, just a few weeks ago he won the FTOPS $109 Omaha rebuy under his online alias - "treysfull21."

With all these accomplishments under his belt already, it seems as though there is little left for Mercier to achieve, but he remains focused on striving to be the best.

"I came here to win a bracelet," he said. "Now I guess I should set my goals higher, like four bracelets or something!"
